Smoking kills, folks

Hello hello everyone! I hope you've all had a fantabulous week!
Thank goodness for journal keeping. If I only had my memory, I probably wouldn't be sending weeklies. I can never remember a thing. Kinda sad really how everything passes by in a blur.

Here are a few gems from this last week!

We were able to meet with Karen this week! She's the one that we talked with a couple weeks ago on her doorstep with her husband. We weren't able to see her last week because she was ill with something, but this time she invited us in!! Her husband didn't join us, but her son did. We dropped a copy of the Book of Mormon off last week, and Karen's been reading it. We talked to them a bit more about it and were able to teach them about the Restoration of the gospel, and a few other things. They asked lots of questions, and it was just so fun. Karen even caught herself multiple times when she was about to refer to us as Mormons haha. Even that simple gesture of trying to call the church by it's real name is so powerful and sweet to me.

When we went over to teach our returning member, James, we brought our family history consultant with us. His wife, who isn't a member, had expressed interest in beginning her family history, so we and James thought it would be a good way to soften her up toward the church. Usually when we go to his house, she goes upstairs to leave us to it, but she joined us this time and they talked all about family history and what they needed to do to start. She's so excited! Woot! What a miracle!

On Saturday, we were supposed to have a lesson in Easterhouse. There's no direct bus from Cumbernauld to there, so we have to take two buses. And it takes an hour to get there! So, we were pretty bummed when she cancelled on us as we were travelling. We chapped there instead the whole day, and with our handy dandy Area Book planner app, we were able to find the addresses of all the inactive members that lived over there! So we went around to try by a few. We chapped one of these homes, and the lady, Sandra, yelled at us to come in. So we opened the door, and peeked in, saying that we were the missionaries, and she told us to come in further (we couldn't see her at this point). When we turned the corner, she was sitting on a little lazy boy in the middle of the room with a cigarette in her hand and a bottle of alcohol on the wee table next to her haha. The smell of cigarette smoke was intense. But we started talking with her, and she told us to sit down, so we did, and we saw a drunk guy lying on the bed behind her. He kept trying to talk to us, and she kept telling him to shut up and to get out of her hoose. It was actually pretty comical. She was super duper sweet, and we found out that she had been baptised when she was eight, but quickly fell away when she grew a bit older. As we were talking with her, more and more people began coming in. Turns out they were having a little family get together with a few of her children and grandchildren. They all started talking to us and started to smoke as they did so. The room got a bit chaotic as everyone was talking over one another and the smell of smoke got strong enough to make my eyes water. I really can't tell you how funny that visit was. Amid the conversation were occasional yelling matches at Jamie, the drunk guy, to shut up and get out. He swore a couple of times, and everyone would gang up on him and start swearing and shouting at him to stop swearing in front of us hahahah. Before making our leave, we said a prayer with them, which Jamie interrupted with a couple of muttered comments, and after we ended, they got on him for being disrespectful. What a colourful, sweet, hilarious bunch. After we got out, I felt the effect of all the smoke and started coughing it out. Pretty sure my lungs are black now. We also smelled pretty bad too. So yeah! That was the highlight of my week I think! We also met a few other cool people in Easterhouse as well, so it was definitely worth the travel.

And we taught Chris a couple of times! He's still doing good, but he and his family are struggling a bit right now. His 13 year old daughter was just diagnosed with stage two breast cancer, so if any of you wouldn't mind keeping him and her in your prayers, I, and I'm sure he, would be grateful. :)

Well, here ends another of Sister Syphus's weeklies. I hope you all are well and happy! And General Conference is next week!! I'm so excited!! It's always one of my most favourite times of the year. Don't forget to prepare for it! It is such a precious gift to have living prophets and apostles. Take advantage of this blessing! Ooh, also, watch the Book of Mormon videos on the website and Gospel Library app if you haven't! They're so good!

Love you and miss you all!
